must be 21 years or older

it was 5 years ago that this guy and my wife formally served me my first starbucks beverage.  not only my first starbucks beverage, but my first full throttled caffeine beverage (yes, it’s true!).  i never tried a full caffeine beverage, as i never drank soda growing up or had the taste of espresso.

seriously, my experience was like trying an adult beverage for the first time.  they both were so excited to order me a drink (three shot mocha).  it seemed like the label on the cup should have read: “must be 21 years or older” to drink.

from that day till the present i have tried all sorts of caffeine induced beverages (ie: monster, advocare spark, starbucks, caribou, etc...).

i blame it on him and my wife for starting this epidemic.

who got you hooked on caffeine?  what type of caffeine products do you prefer?

george, my first, was born a few months ago.  right now he is in the oral stage…putting almost anything in his mouth! (God help us!)

right now we are trying to keep certain objects away from him, so he doesn’t grab a dirty sock, shoe, or foreign object and shove it in his mouth. 

in fact, we try to limit his intake milk and the occasional binky (a.k.a. pacifier).

there’s an old story i heard years ago about how parents are very careful with what types of things go in their child’s mouth – especially their first.

for example, the pacifier falls out of the first kid’s mouth, and the mom picks it up and puts it in a pot of boiling water, sterilizes it, pulls it out with tongs, and waves it around to air-dry it before inserting it into the child’s mouth. the second kid’s pacifier falls out, and she runs it under some cold tap water, dries it off with a dishtowel and gives it back. the third kid drops the pacifier. the mom picks it up, blows on it and sticks it back in the kid’s mouth. not a big deal.

as a general rule, we’re quite careful what we put into something that’s valuable to us.

now consider this:  what are we putting in our mind?  what are we exposing our thoughts to? 

jesus said these words, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes or grapes from briars. Good people bring good things out of the good stored up in their heart, and evil people bring evil things out of the evil stored up in their heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

jesus points out something so brilliantly simple that many of us miss it!  simply, what type of fruit does a fig tree produce?  figs!  pretty simple, right?

in gist, what’s going on the inside of the tree determines what is produced on the outside. 

it would seem that jesus is trying to convey that what is going on the inside of the tree is more important than the outside.

jesus wants one’s life to be transformed on the inside.  that one’s life shouldn’t be riddled with resentment, anger, bitterness and so forth.

you see, what thoughts enter the gate of your mind and are readily pervading it, will invariably occupy it; indelibly expressed throughout your life, character and daily living.

let me make an observation about jesus’ words above.  jesus is not giving a command; jesus is simply observing how things are!  certain fruit comes from certain types of trees.  you store up certain types of stuff in your life, it will come out. 

so the question for us is, “what types of things are we storing up in our mind?”  maybe it’s time to be careful about what we are thinking on and exposing ourselves to.

i don’t know about you, but i don’t like the taste of a dirty sock.

we are approaching a transitional time as a nation, as we will have a new president in the next few months.  whether you are democrat or republican, I believe the quote below spells out the importance of leadership and the price tag of freedom. 

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

here are few highlights from a great weekend:

  •  i watched little g sunday while my wife lead the children’s volunteers in a meeting and celebration…(in fact, i heard part of the meeting and my wife said that the children’s department has seen 118% growth in 2 years!!!…yea God and yea to those who have served to help “lead children into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.”)
  • our church community kicked off a brand new series…deal or no deal…if you have a chance these next couple of weeks, come check out the orchard, or download the messages for free!
  • about the orchard, the beacon newspaper came by to interview our lead pastor (scott hodge). they will be running a story on our church community, after catching word that the orchard was recently named one of the top 25 most innovative churches by outreach magazine.
  • enjoyed some good mexican food with some close friends this weekend.
  • george has started growling…with other unidentified slurs and gurgles (i’ll keep you posted if it changes to something i can make out, like english).
  • i just got back from an intense kickboxing workout…i certainly have to regain my technique and stamina…thanks kevin for humbling me… :-).

i wasn’t a fan of either the patriots or the giants.  but, i picked the lesser of two evils, which was the giants. 

so why you ask, did i pick the giants? 

here are the shallow reasons why:

> i think brady is a great qb, but he isn’t my favorite.

> i believe there is too much hype around the patriots (i know, i know…an impecceble pre-season…but does that really matter?  at the end of the day, isn’t the superbowl the measuring stick?)

> i like payton manning (notice i didn’t say i liked “eli manning.”  that is correct.  b/c i like eli’s brother, he’s a winner in my book.)

> lastly, the cowboys were not in the superbowl (thanks jessica)…and there has never been 2 losers in a superbowl, so i had to pick a team early on, so i went with the giants.

that is my shallow, short list, of reasons why i picked the giants.

i hope you patriots fans or addictive gamblers didn’t lose a lot of money yesterday :-).

i hope the cowboys win…

ok…i realize the cowboys are not in the superbowl…

honestly, i don’t care for either team, but i do hope it is a close game!

between finishing up a couple projects for school, hopefully i will be able to catch part of the game…i know i will at least take a timeout (no pun intended) to watch the halftime show.
